3 Dimensional Leadership
A “complete leader” takes a holistic approach to leadership that involves excelling in three key dimensions: the personal, interpersonal, and group.
1. The Personal Dimension: This is about self-management. A complete leader must be adept at managing their own thoughts, emotions, stress, wellbeing, focus, and decision-making processes. It’s about having a strong sense of self-awareness and self-regulation.
2. The Interpersonal Dimension: This focuses on the leader’s ability to build and maintain relationships. It involves effective communication, motivation, listening, empathy, and the ability to coach and teach others. A complete leader must be able to connect with people on an individual level and foster trust and respect.
3. The Group Dimension: This pertains to the leader’s interaction with their team as a whole. It’s about creating a shared vision, instilling a strong culture, setting standards, and building a sense of community and commitment. A complete leader must be able to guide the team towards common goals and ensure that everyone feels valued and engaged.
Complete leaders are also described as “servant leaders,” who prioritize the growth and wellbeing of their team members. They understand that to achieve sustainable results, they must develop their people and foster a positive work environment. This approach to leadership is intentional and requires deliberate practice, as it involves constantly balancing and honing one’s skills in all three dimensions. It’s a path less traveled, but it’s one that can lead to a fulfilling legacy and a reputation as a leader who people genuinely want to work for.
